Eligibility Requirements

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS OGS Scholarship) initiative encourages excellence in scholarship at universities in Ontario that receive public funding.

Since 1975, the OGS Scholarship program has awarded merit-based scholarships to Ontario’s top graduate students in all fields of study.

The scholarship program at U of T is financed jointly by the province of Ontario and the university.

The province provides OGS prizes to institutions, outlining the quantity of awards each may offer to students each year.

This year, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) provided the university with 22 OGS prizes for international students.

As a result, each graduating unit will be assigned a quota of 1-3 applications to be submitted to and judged centrally by SGS.

A full-time student is one who is enrolled in at least 60% of a full-time course load (40% for students with persistent disabilities) or as defined by their institution.

Each graduate unit determines program eligibility on an individual basis.

Students should carefully read the information provided by the graduate unit in which they wish to enroll to discover whether their program is eligible for the graduate unit’s OGS competition.

Have not exhausted the lifetime maximum of government-funded assistance or the maximum OGS assistance available for their current level of study (see SGS website under maximum support); and

Have earned at least an A- (or equivalent) in each of the previous two years of study (full-time equivalent); or, if the student has completed two years of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least an A- (or equivalent) on all graduate courses completed.

NEW: At the discretion of the graduate unit, exceptions may be given for highly qualified applicants with GPAs below the statutory minimum.

Applicants with documented medical concerns or family care duties, applicants who have pursued alternative career routes, or mature students with professional experience are examples of instances in which a unit may consider providing an exemption.

Note: If the marks used to calculate an applicant’s grade point average (GPA) are not accessible (for example, courses were graded on a pass-fail basis), the most recent available undergraduate or graduate marks should be used to determine eligibility.

To be eligible for the OGS Scholarship, beneficiaries must: register and maintain full-time enrollment at U of T in an appropriate program at the graduate unit from which the OGS was given;

Anyone who withdraws, transfers to part-time status, completes degree requirements before the conclusion of their award, or fails to complete the full term must reimburse any monies received for the incomplete term.

Accept research assistantships, part-time teaching positions, or other paid employment that does not interfere with their status as a full-time graduate student and is in accordance with graduate unit policies.

Students who work full-time are typically ineligible for an OGS from the University of Toronto and cannot hold an OGS award in the same session (overlapping) or from the same award year as an Ontario Trillium Scholarship, Vanier CGS, or another OGS.

The eligibility conditions listed above are merely the bare minimum. Graduate units may impose additional requirements for applying for, receiving, or holding an OGS.

Please carefully read the information provided by your graduate unit and, if necessary, inquire about any extra prerequisites or conditions not specified here.

How to Apply For OGS Scholarship

Applicants must use the U of T OGS Online Application, which is accessible via the SGS OGS webpage, to submit an OGS application to their proposed graduate unit.

Candidates must meet the internal submission deadlines set by each graduate unit.  Before beginning an OGS application, applicants should confirm the graduate unit application deadline and examine the U of T OGS Application Instructions.

Once the full application has been completed and submitted electronically, it will be made available for evaluation and consideration by the prospective graduate unit.

International students should be aware of the following: Applicants who have a valid study permit by the OGS international application deadline for the graduate unit are allowed to apply using the same application process and internal deadlines as their current or proposed graduate unit.

Graduate units will choose and submit a restricted number of applications to the School of Graduate Studies for centralized adjudication.

OGS Scholarship applicants who want to be considered for other awards that use the OGS application for selection must select “yes” on the “Awards and Financial Aid” page of the OGS application form to give permission to the proposed graduate unit and SGS to use your OGS application for other award competitions, if available.

Results

Graduate units will publish their internal competition results on the OGS application system, which applicants will be able to view in late April 2024.

SGS will send out official award offers from the SGS consolidated competition in late May 2024.
