Alexander Rutherford Scholarship Requirements 2023
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must have had permanent residency in Canada for at least 12 months.
Applicants must be Alberta residents, and the following conditions must be met to be deemed Alberta residents:
- One parent or legal guardian must have had permanent residency in Canada for at least 12 months before the applicant begins a program of study.
- The candidate has lived in Alberta for at least 12 months before beginning a program of study.
- The applicant is ineligible for a scholarship for any grade unless the applicant or the applicant’s parent(s) or legal guardian lived in Alberta throughout that grade.
- Applicants must have completed high school before applying.
- Applicants must be enrolled in at least one semester of full-time post-secondary education or an apprenticeship program.
- Make sure you have an official high school transcript with you when you apply.
- You must have a current Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- GED certificates are not accepted.
- Previous scholarship winners are ineligible to reapply.
- This prize is not open to students who do not have numerical grades.
- Before you begin your application, be sure you meet the course prerequisites.
- An Alberta Student Number (ASN) is required.
- The standards for high school transcript grades may differ.
- This scholarship is not available to visa students.
- Pen studies and undeclared programs of study are also acceptable.

How to apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship
- Before submitting your online application, be sure you are eligible.
- Create an Alberta Student Aid account with your email address and confirm your identity (see link here).
- If you already have an account, sign in and look for the Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship.
- Fill out the scholarship application form with the necessary information, such as your SIN, ASN, high school name, and so on.
- Submit the form, and Student Aid will validate your high school transcript.
- If you are eligible for the scholarship, your post-secondary school will be contacted to confirm your enrollment.
- After your school confirms your enrollment, Alberta Student Aid will mail you a check a month later. If your institution does not confirm your enrollment within 30 days, you will be issued a document to fill out and return to your school.
If you misplace your cheque, you can request a stop payment and a replacement cheque from Alberta Student Aid.
Is the scholarship awarded to everyone?
Not everyone will be awarded a scholarship. Many students will be screened out by the scholarship committee. Only qualified candidates will be chosen and awarded the scholarship.

Selection Process for Alexander Rutherford Scholarship
A student must have a minimum aggregate average in at least one grade based on five designated courses. Grades 10, 11, or 12 as determined by:
- Courses and marks on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement for Alberta Residents
- High school diploma obtained outside of Alberta
- Courses or marks earned in another province that show on an official high school transcript

Is the Alberta Rutherford Scholarship subject to taxation?
The Alberta Rutherford scholarship is not tax-deductible. It has no justification to be taxed because it supports full-time post-secondary education. The Rutherford scholarship recipients are handed a T4A slip that exempts them from paying taxes. As a result, the scholarship is tax-free.
If you apply for this scholarship, make sure you correctly fill out the application form before submitting it. This is not to say that you cannot change your information if you make a mistake.

Yes, retakes or rewrites are permitted as long as they are done before enrolling in a higher-level course or beginning post-secondary education.
